I believe that surfers or anyone working in a shark danger zone should carry with them some sort of electric stunt handgun that will work only underwater somehow.
Gabby-A much more realistic solution, that is indeed being considered in some danzer zones are shark repellent sprays such as the one sold by sharktecdefense.com
In the article, you mention about not having contrasting colors. Other articles & videos say that sharks are colorblind. (As/per Western Australian scientific research). With that being said, does color really matter? How about the contrasting black/white patterns that suggest to make sharks think that you are poisonous and not edible?
What about a little knife in a doob tube you could wear around your neck or wrist?
