What do I need to start surfing?

The most important thing you need to start surfing is motivation. Surfing is a very challenging sport that can often be frustrating to say the least. Determination to get knocked down often and get right back up is essential. Once you have that, you need to get your hands on some equipment. I would recommend either borrowing a surfboard and going with a friend or finding a surf school and renting a board. The last thing you want to do is spend several hundred dollars on a board only to find that you hate the sport and ultimately be stuck with a giant dust collector in your garage. Here is the essential equipment: 1. Surfboard - Preferably a soft top longboard or a regular foam longboard. The length should be a minimum of 9feet. If you're petite in size and think it might be tough handling such a big board, you might want to go down in length to about 8 feet and up. 2. Leash- Despite seeing a few guys in the lineup with no leash on their board, this is a must if you are a beginner. The last thing you want to do is to chase your board all over the place in deep ocean waters or letting that board loose to attack your fellow surfers. That could be dangerous. 3. Surf wax - If you’re using a soft top board, you may not need to apply wax. Otherwise, wax is needed to keep you planted on the board. Without, you would slip right off your board. 4. Wetsuit or rash guard - Depending on the water temperature, you may need a wetsuit. If you see that the majority of surfers in the lineup are wearing wetsuit, chances are you'll need to wear one too. You can be macho and try to tough it out but you're not likely going to last long in the water. If the water temperature is warm enough to trunk it, I highly recommend at least wearing a rash guard. I know it's a great opportunity to work on that sexy tan, but red, itchy, irritated skin and stinging nipples are not so sexy.
