How do I know when to stand up on my surfboard? I keep standing up but I can't get into the wave and it rolls by me.

This may be the toughest part to learning to ride a surfboard. You must go totally by feel. Once you paddle yourself to the point that you could ride the surfboard and the wave riding on your belly without another paddle, you need to get to your feet. Longboards get to this point much earlier in a wave, clearly before the wave is set to break. Shortboards reach this state much later in the cycle of the wave, gliding only moments before the wave breaks.
