how do i read the wave and stay in the sweet spot?

The first habit you need to develop is to keep your eyes on the peak of the wave. It's much easier to do this going front side than it is going backside. A lot of beginners and intermediate surfers don't turn their head enough and they're use to looking straight down the line. Once you can identify where the sweet spot is, you can then pump and speed up to catch up to the wave or do a cut back if you're to far in front. When you're in the sweet spot, its much easier to do more advanced maneuvers or hit the lip at its peak.
