Mctavish Original

Manufacturer Description
The Original is a radical longboard that has been blowing minds for over 15 years! It was the first modern performance longboard, and was pieced together by Bob using all his knowledge gained from leading the shortboard revolution. The board has a radical flipped rocker profile and a very hippy tail, giving it an accurate pivot point. The Original is loose and fast off the tail, while retaining good noseriding ability. Available with or without nose channels, The Original is an Aussie favourite!

I heard Industry guys raving about this one for years. I recently picked up a 9'1 Surftech version and found out they were right. The proper blend of concave, rocker, bottom channels and pintail make it all come together. Definitely one of the best longboards for beach breaks.

I've had my surftech Original for 6 years, still my first choice even in bigger waves.

A great alround board. Good in steeper waves due to the rocker.

The ORIGINAL surftech is my favorite board for medium to big wave, it's a real performance board for who like to surf longboard like a shortboard....on small condition is hard to paddle and to noseride.

I've had several of these, Surftech, EPS and poly. My favorite longboard ever. Set up with thruster fins, rips rail to rail and vertically.

I'm on my third Mctavish original! 2 Surf techs and one SLX version. The first Surf tech snapped in a smallish shore break which surprised me but perhaps I got unlucky, my present surf tech has taken a good few beatings and still going strong although the paintwork scratches and chips like hell. In between that I had an SLX which I now regret selling, I would say it was a little bit more responsive than the surf tech version, not quite as much volume it seemed but I felt more confident on it in biggish surf (above head high) and could duck dive well for a longboard. The surftech is also just about duck diveable but takes more effort due to feeling a bit more corky. If I could only have one board it would def be the original, I've never quite known what they mean by a 'beach break specialist' but having taken her out on quite a fast head to head and half high reef break yesterday and struggled I'm starting to think she performs best where the waves are a little bit shorter period and/ or fatter e.g the average beach break (plenty of exceptions around the world of course). When I paddle her the sweet spot (where my chest lies and I can control my weight distribution) is quite far forward for a longboard, the beauty of this is that despite the relatively low volume for the board it can still get into waves nice and early as a lot of the body weight is forward producing lots of momentum- sometimes there's only a foot or so of board in front of me and I feel like it's a mini mal. Usually on an average beach break this works well as, if it feels like the board is about to pearl, I can just arch more to compensate, what I found with surfing the steeper reef break was that I couldn't get away with this, the wave was going from gentle lump to wall so quickly that I had to move further back on the board to prevent the pearl, in doing this I seemed to lose the sweet spot and I struggled to pop up cleanly. I don't mean to be down on this board, it really is great for 90 % of my surfing, really responsive and I've had many great waves on her.Hope that is not too disjointed and of some help, I'm average surf fitness, 6 foot 3 and about 90 kg if that helps :)

I own this board in SLX (and also previously the Fireball Evo SLX). This is a better all-around board. Better for late drops on bigger/steeper waves and more lively than the Evo.

I have a Surftech version of this. Paddles like crazy and handles very well for its volume.

I had many McTavish boards. The PU Original is an excellent board but unfortunately now in two pieces. The Surftech Original after 2 years as my main ride is still in mint condition. I paddled out at Cabarita NSW Aust. and who do i see. Bob McT riding a Surftech Original. He tells me its his go to travel board. MINT
